ANN ARBOR, Mich. -

The University of Michigan plans to invest $17.5 million to further expand research space at its North Campus Research Complex.

The Ann Arbor school said its Board of Regents on Thursday approved a project to renovate and open 68,000-square feet of biomedical research space on the site.

Nearly 1,700 people already work in the laboratories and offices at NCRC, and hundreds more are preparing to move to the site.

The North Campus Research Complex is drugmaker Pfizer Inc.'s former research and development center that the school bought in 2009.
