A nurse in Ohio accidentally threw away a donated kidney during transplant surgery in what doctors called a rare accident.
Surgeons tried unsuccessfully for two hours to revive the kidney, which was removed from a Toledo man and meant for his older sister, the Toledo Blade reported.
University of Toledo Medical Center officials said "human error" rendered the kidney "unusable," but have declined to go into further detail.
However, Toledo-Lucas County health commissioner David Grossman and other sources confirmed to the Blade that the kidney was accidentally disposed of by a nurse.
Two nurses have been placed on administrative leave while the hospital reviews the incident, The Associated Press reported.
The hospital has since voluntarily suspended its kidney transplant program, according to the New York Daily News.
