OAK PARK, Mich. – An Oak Park ban on serving alcohol by the glass that has been in place since 1945 could soon be lifted.
The Oak Park City Council will consider a change in the law to allow the city to issue tavern licenses for restaurants to serve beer and wine.
Zeana Attisha, owner of the Sahara Restaurant in Oak Park, said it's about time.
"It's not normal in 2013 to have an establishment that cannot offer these things, even just for dinner," Attisha said.
The Sahara Restaurant has been open for 30 years. Zeana Attisha said she started an effort to change the law a year ago.
"I started with a letter to the city manager last summer and went from there, just basically just requested the city council would even discuss the issue," Attisha said.
The City Council will consider allowing for tavern licenses at its March 4 meeting.
Zeana Attisha is hoping for even more change. She has been collecting signatures to have the city allow liquor licenses and hopes to have that question on the next election ballot.
