OAK PARK, Mich. – For nearly 70 years, Oak Park has banned the sale of alcohol at restaurants. But, that could change when the City Council meets Monday to vote on two ordinances that would allow restaurants to apply for tavern licenses to serve beer and wine.
Restaurants must be able to serve a minimum of 40 guests at a time and there must be at least 10 food items on the menu to be approved for a license.
No more than a hand full of restaurants in the city would meet those requirements.
Oak Park has been experiencing financial troubles and has struggled to attract new businesses to the city.
Supporters say the change of law would make the city more competitive with neighboring communities.
Oak Park is one of four dry cities in Michigan.
Some are worried that the alcoholic drinks would bring more crime.
The community will get to voice their support or concerns before council members vote.
