Obama addresses evolving terrorism from Oval Office

President Barack Obama spoke for about 13 minutes in his third speech from the Oval Office. He outlined his strategy to keep the country safe as the threat of terrorism evolves.

Using some of his harshest language to date, Obama detailed his plan to prevent another terrorist attack. He said the U.S. is working with allies to destroy ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria.

He also made his case against a ground war.

In a plea to Congress, Obama said people on no-fly lists should not be able to buy guns.

He ended his address with a call for unity; that Americans should reject fear and suspicion of fellow Muslim-Americans.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus released statement in response to the president's address.

"In times of national crisis, Americans must come together to take on those who wish to tear down the very fabric of our country and the freedoms we enjoy," the statement reads. "We face a real threat from radical Islamic terrorism that we can only defeat by uniting against their violent and extreme agenda. The terrorists seek to tear down the very constitutional rights we enjoy and that countless men and women have fought to defend; to react by trying to limit the rights enshrined by our constitution would be a terrible mistake.

"We will defeat ISIS but we cannot do so by continuing the current approach. The path laid out by President Obama and supported by Hillary Clinton has not worked, and ISIS has only gained in strength.  The attacks in San Bernardino should serve as a wake-up call for Obama and Clinton that the way to victory is not through the status quo but refocusing our efforts to defeat ISIS."
