Off-duty Detroit police officer involved in deadly shooting

Officer stepped in to breakup a fight between a man, woman

An off-duty Detroit police officer was involved in an early morning shooting on the city's west side.

It happened just before 3 Thursday morning when a nine year veteran of the department was at a gas station located near Seven Mile and Pierson Roads. The officer allegedly witnessed a man and woman fighting in the parking lot of the gas station when he approached the couple. When the officer approached, the man reportedly pulled out a gun.

The officer then pulled out his gun, fatally shooting the man. The off-duty officer was also shot. He was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

The incident is being investigated by the Detroit Homicide and Internal Affairs Department.
