DETROIT -

An off-duty Detroit police officer nearly became the victim of a shooting Tuesday evening when one of the drivers in a two-car crash tried to leave the scene at Schoolcraft and Rosemont Avenue.

The off-duty officer saw the man, who police say caused the crash, leaving the crash and start running. The officer gave chase and the suspect pulled out a gun and started shooting at him.

The officer returned fire, striking the suspect in the back. The suspect is hospitalized in serious condition.

The officer was not injured.

The man in the other vehicle, 76-year-old James Atkins, and a 12-year-old boy who was waiting to cross the street at the time of the crash also were injured. The boy is still in the hospital with a broken ankle. Atkins was recovering Tuesday night at a hospital.
