Officer finds woman bound, shot in pickup truck; Husband arrested

DETROIT – An undercover officer saved the life of a woman who was bound, beaten and shot by her husband when she was found Wednesday afternoon in a pickup truck parked in a Detroit field, police said.

Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt said the officer is with the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department but was working on a car theft team with the Detroit Police Department when he noticed the Chevy Silverado parked suspiciously in a field near Gilbo and Lyford avenues.

Dolunt said that when the officer approached, a man in the Silverado got out and said he had run out of gas. He also flashed a badge and said he was with a fugitive recovery team. That's when the officer noticed the woman in the front seat, bound with duct tape at her ankles and wrists, Dolunt said. The woman had also been shot in each leg.

Dolunt said.

Dolunt said the victim is a 32-year-old Hazel Park woman and the suspect is her 34-year-old husband, who is in custody. Dolunt also said the man's badge is fake.

“This individual had taken all of her property and thrown it in a field across the street ... We assume, obviously, he was going to kill her," Dolunt said. “This officer saved a life.”

The woman is being treated at a hospital.

The field is the same area where two Westland teens were found killed in 2012, Dolunt said.
