Officer hurt by bullet fragment after bullet hits dog's head

HARPER WOODS, Mich. – A Harper Woods Public Safety officer was hit by a fragment of a bullet Sunday morning after it struck a pit bull in the head and broke into pieces.

Officers were trying to capture two vicious pit bulls at around 8:30 a.m. near N. Harper Avenue and Parkcrest Drive. One of the dogs charged at an officer and he shot at it to protect himself.

When the bullet hit the pit bull's head it broke into several pieces, one of which bounced off the sidewalk and hit another officer in the arm.

The officer was taken to St. John Hospital after the incident. He was received treatment and was released.

Both pit bulls were taken to a veterinarian in Harper Woods.

There were no further injuries reported during the incident.
