2010: Twenty-nine coal miners are killed in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia. The Mine Safety and Health Administration eventually concluded that flagrant safety violations contributed to a coal dust explosion in the mine. The accident was the worst in the United States since 1970, when 38 miners were killed in a mine explosion in Hyden, Kentucky.
