Organization helps change lives in Oakland County

RTOC working with volunteers in Oakland County

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI. – Rebuilding Together Oakland County will transform more than 30 homes in nine Oakland County municipalities Saturday. Volunteers will work from dawn until dusk to ensure that families in communities throughout Oakland County Michigan live in a safe and healthy environment.

Each year, RTOC works with volunteers to repair the homes and yards of low-income homeowners who are elderly, disabled, or military veterans who are unable to do the work themselves.

Scott McCullough's home in West Bloomfield was a flurry of activity. Volunteers are transforming the home's garage into a bathroom.

McCullough's 13-year-old daughter Molly McCullough has cerebral palsy. For years, Scott and his wife have had to carry Molly upstairs to get to their bathroom.

Molly McCullough is now 95 pounds and just bathing her is a team effort.

"We do our best to work in a kind, caring way," said Gale Frazee, with RTOC. "That's what people here are doing today."

"They start showing up (with) material, dumpster. It's like, oh my gosh, this is real. This is cool," Scott McCullough said.

After the group is done at the McCullough house, there will be a big bathroom where Molly McCullough can be wheeled right into a shower.

"We were giving her a bath the other day and said, 'This is one of the last times we're going to do this, Molly."
