Pelosi is the House Democratic leader. She has served in Congress for a quarter of a century representing a San Francisco district and became the first woman speaker of the House.

Attorney General Eric Holder gave last year's keynote. Other recent speakers have included civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and former President Bill Clinton.

The Detroit chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People says the dinner draws 10,000 people each year.
