SAN FRANCISCO – A power outage struck a wide area of San Francisco on Friday, blacking out about 90,000 utility customers.
A series of outages began affecting the city at 9 a.m., said Tamar Sarkissian, a spokeswoman for Pacific Gas & Electric.

Crews were assessing the problem and there was no immediate estimate for restoration of electricity.
The outage affected the Financial District, including Bay Area Rapid Transit's downtown Montgomery Station.
People used the lights of their cellphones to walk through the darkened station before BART stopped service there.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported the outage also affected the Presidio, and KRON-TV reported effects stretched to the Marina/Cow Hollow area.

11:55 a.m.
The San Francisco Fire Department says it has responded to more than 100 calls for service since a power outage struck a large area of the city.
However, no injuries related to the blackout were reported.
The department tweeted that the calls included 20 elevators with people stuck inside.
The department adds there have been no delays in responding to calls.
Pacific Gas & Electric says a series of outages began at 9 a.m. and within 30 minutes about 90,000 customers lost power.

Pacific Gas & Electric says about 90,000 customers have been affected by a power outage in San Francisco.
PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said a series of outages began affecting parts of the city at 9 a.m. Friday.
Sarkissian says crews are assessing the situation but there's no immediate estimate for when power will be restored.
The outage includes the Financial District and other areas. One downtown commuter rail station has been shut down.

A call seeking comment from Pacific Gas & Electric was not immediately returned.

About 90,000 people are without power in San Francsico, the city's Department of Emergency Management said Friday afternoon.
The large power outage is affecting mostly the northern and central neighborhoods, including Pacific Heights, the Presidio, the Financial District and Fisherman's Wharf.
"We are closely coordinating with all critical facilities, including hospitals, schools, and public transportation agencies," the department said in a statement.
California Pacific Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital remain open and are using backup generators to operate, it said. New patients are being rerouted to other fully operational hospitals in the city.
Public schools are open and operating under standard blackout operating procedures.
TV affiliate KPIX reported a downtown BART station closed during rush hour; people were stranded in elevators; operating rooms were shut down; and the city's famed cable cars were halted. The power outage has also caused traffic chaos.
Fire and PG&E crews were at the site of a fire at a utility substation and vault facility on 600 Larkin St. The utility told KPIX it was the "primary source" of the outage.
