A press release states that at about 3 a.m., a Bloomfield Township police officer stopped Wallace's Cadillac Escalade in the area of Telegraph and Long Lake roads for erratic driving.

According to the police report, Wallace told police he had been out at a club with friends and "had about four beers in the previous two hours."

Wallace was given a breathalyzer test and police said the results were over the Michigan legal limit of 0.08 percent at 0.14 percent.

Police said a search of his vehicle revealed an unloaded handgun in a backpack, and that Wallace didn't have a permit for it. Police said the gun is registered to a family member.

According to the police report, Wallace told police the gun was his wife's, and that he had forgotten it was in the car.

Wallce's next court hearing is Oct. 3 before Judge Kimberly Small, who recently sentenced former college and professional basketball player Jalen Rose to jail time for a drunken driving conviction.

Wallace played as a center for the Detroit Pistons from 2000 until 2006, winning a championship with Detroit in 2004.

The Detroit Pistons declined to comment on Wallace's arrest.

Fan Michael Holt, 19, said he's grown up with Wallace as a sports hero.

"He is my favorite basketball player. You know, he was the best. He had the fro and everything. He was cool," Holt said.

Wallace signed a four-year, $60 million deal with the Chicago Bulls in 2006.

From there, Wallace was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers before re-signing with the Pistons as a free agent for a 1-year deal.
