Pistons award $23K in college scholarships to competing high school seniors

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Detroit Pistons are awarding $22,500 in college scholarships to high school students who competed during their 10th annual Black History Month program at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

The event was hosted by former Piston and member of the legendary "Bad Boys" NBA championship squad of 1989 Rick Mahorn.

The theme for this year's program was how the civil rights movement changed America over the past 50 years and continues to do so. Students had the option to create a presentation on that theme, as a speech, poetry, dance or rap performance.

Eight high school seniors from different schools competed.

The first place scholarship prize was a $10,000; second place was $7,000; third place was $3,500; and fourth place was $2,000.
