Plymouth 'bomb' turns out to be old costume prop

Police say homemade prop was thrown in Dumpster on Union Street after resident was cleaning out garage

DETROIT – Plymouth police say a suspicious device that was found in a Dumpster last week and prompted an investigation by a bomb squad has turned out to be part of an old Halloween costume.

Police closed down a portion of Union Street just north of the downtown area on Aug. 16 while the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad took a look at the device.

Consequently, police said the device is a homemade prop that was bought by a Plymouth resident a year ago for a costume. Police said the resident was cleaning out his garage and threw the prop away.

No charges will be filed.

Police said people should dismantle any props before throwing them out as not to cause any alarm.
