Police believe they found vehicle of man killed outside Detroit Coney Island

Witnesses, police say deadly shooting was part of carjacking in parking lot of Olympia Coney Island

DETROIT – Detroit police were at the scene of a carjacking and shooting at the corner of Chalmers and Harper on Detroit's east side.

It happened at 4 a.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Olympia Coney Island.

Witnesses tell Local 4 that a man in his late 20s or early 30s pulled into the Coney Island parking lot in his red Range Rover. He was talking to a customer and when that customer went inside to check on her food order, people heard shots.

The woman who's working behind the counter at the Coney Island tells Local 4, "We saw two guys on our security camera walk past the man and his SUV and then double back."

The men shot the victim and took off in his Range Rover. The man later died.

As of Thursday evening, Detroit police believe they have found the stolen vehicle.

However, police say they still haven't made any arrests in this case.

Employees and others tried to help victim

The Coney Island employee and several witnesses then ran out into the parking lot to find the victim shot in the chest.

"We grabbed napkins and towels, anything we could to hold on his chest to try to stop the bleeding while we waited for the ambulance," the employee told Local 4. "He wasn't breathing. We applied pressure and he began breathing again. We prayed over him, hoping he makes it."

Latoya Canning could have run for cover when shots were fired, but instead ran to help the man.

"I helped him because if it was my brother, my son or one of my uncles, I would want somebody to help them, too," says Canning.

Police still seeking suspects

Police say the two carjackers ran from around the corner to ambush their victim.

"He had his hands up and was backing away when they shot him," one witness said.

Investigators had the parking lot of the business taped off with crime scene tape as they looked for clues and talked to witnesses.

The employee says she believes the shooting was caught on security camera.

The Coney Island's owner has been called to come in to work the security camera system so police can review the footage.
