Police investigate after Inkster man shot, killed

Mother grieves after her 26-year-old son is fatally shot

INKSTER, Mich. – Police are investigating after a 26-year-old man was shot and killed Friday night in Inkster.

Officers arrived around 11:15 p.m. on Harriet, north of Carlysle, to find Vernon Hurts, 26, with multiple gunshot wounds.

Local 4's Will Jones spoke with the Hurts' mother, Kathy Ballard, who said this is not the first time she's had to bury a child because of gun violence.

"I'm on the edge right now. I'm on the edge," said Ballard. "We miss him already. This shouldn't have happened."

Ballard said she's felt this sorrow before, as four years ago, her then 16-year-old son, Leon, was shot and killed in Inkster.

"It has not been solved or anything," Ballard said.

Hurts leaves behind three young children, including a 5-day-old son, Jordan.

This recent incident comes after a swing of shootings on the Fourth of July. Officials said there have been ten homicides this year so far in Inkster.

Police said a man was found shot in the head at 9:30 p.m. behind Fast Franks party store at Inkster Road and New York Street. Family members identified the man as Brian Walker and said he died at the hospital.

In addition to that shooting, at about 11:30 p.m., police said a man was found shot dead on Hickory Street. There was evidence at the scene that another person had been shot, but a second victim was not found.

Police said a hospital later reported that a woman had come in for help after being shot. She is expected to be OK.

Ballard is praying for her family and others going through the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence.

"I just pray for all the moms, the fathers and all the families that lost they loved ones," said Ballard. "I just pray that things get better for us, and that we stay strong."

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to contact Inkster police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.
