Police investigate threat to safety of Detroit schools

Classes proceed Wednesday as scheduled, police say

DETROIT – The Detroit Public Schools Community District received a threat to the safety of the schools Tuesday from an unidentified source, officials announced.

"Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority," officials said.

In response to the threat, the DPSCD Police Department and Detroit police have heightened security at all DPSCD schools during a "heightened investigation."

"'It's not safe.' How are you gonna tell us it's a threat and you're not saying where the threat came from?" parent Zabrina Walker said. "How you got the threat, or what the threat is about? So if you're going to heighten the security at the school, what are you gonna do? More security guards, more police officers?"

Walker and other parents are nervous about sending their children to school this week, especially with such little information.

"You heard the message, it's not saying anything," Walker said. "It's just that we're going to heighten security at the school."

"I'm concerned now because, you know, why would send a message out like that and the information is not complete?" Albin Gonzalez said. "It leaves people hanging about what's really going on and what's going to happen."

Classes will be held Wednesday as scheduled, police said.
