DETROIT - Authorities say the man who abducted and raped a Central Michigan University student used a BB gun.
The gun was found with 30-year-old Eric Ramsey after he was killed early Thursday by a Crawford County sheriff's deputy, reports The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant and Mlive.com.
Police say Ramsey abducted a woman at gunpoint outside the Student Activity Center in Mount Pleasant, and then drove away in her SUV.
Michigan State Police Lt. Derrick Carroll says the gun was made to look like a 45-caliber weapon. He says there was no way to know it was a BB gun.
The woman was taken to a home about 4 miles off campus where she was bound and raped.
Authorities say Ramsey put her back in the vehicle and pledged to kill her, but she escaped and ran to a home yelling for help.
Ramsey than set the house on fire where the woman had fled for help.
While the victim was inside talking to an emergency dispatcher, Ramsey "ended up pouring gasoline on the house and then lit it on fire," Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said previously.
Thursday morning, Ramsey was spotted by police in Otsego County, where he rammed the first of two state police cars.
The sheriff said he subsequently stole a truck and was fatally shot by a deputy in Crawford County, 85 miles north of the university.
