State Rep. Roy Schmidt of Grand Rapids has switched parties to run as a Republican after originally filing to run for re-election as a Democrat.
His move angered Democrats because Schmidt waited until just before Tuesday's 4 p.m. filing deadline to announce his switch.
Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer said in a statement that Schmidt took a "sneaky approach" to try to guarantee re-election by avoiding a primary fight. Democrat Matt Mojzak also is seeking the seat.
Brewer says Schmidt should return any campaign donations from Democrats.
Schmidt says he switched parties because of "extreme Democratic Party bosses" like Brewer. He'll now caucus with the House's GOP majority.
Michigan Republican Party Chairman Bobby Schostak applauds Schmidt's move.
Schmidt was elected in 2008 and can serve one more House term.
