(CNN) -- Sen. John McCain said Thursday that his former political ally and close friend, Chuck Hagel, was wrong in opposing force surges in Iraq and Afghanistan, telling a committee hearing on Hagel's nomination as defense secretary that they had "fundamental differences" on important issues.
