Portion of I-375 is closed until morning

MDOT says closure is part of repair work after Sunday's tanker fire

DETROIT – A stretch of northbound Interstate 375 in Detroit has been shut down so repair work can begin on the area affected by Sunday's tanker explosion.

MDOT said the north I-75 ramp at I-375 is expected to reopen sometime early Saturday morning.

Traffic will still be able to go southbound during the northbound closure.

As an alternative, drivers can take Jefferson Avenue to the Lodge Freeway.

What happened

A tanker truck carrying 9,000 gallons of unleaded fuel exploded Sunday morning on the northbound I-75 ramp (the Stroh's curve) at I-375.

The driver wasn't hurt, but the crash forced the closure of the ramp until late Friday so about 300 feet of concrete can be replaced.

The tanker driver, a 36-year-old Detroit man, told investigators mechanical problems caused his vehicle's back tires to lock and the tanker to overturn. He has since been ticketed for careless driving.

MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division will also be conducting a compliance review of the driver's employer.

Detours for the NB I-75 ramp:

- Southbound M-10 to Forest or Howard exit

- I-94 exit early near Midtown area

- Gratiot Avenue

- Michigan Avenue
