Potholes may have played role in deadly crash on Pontiac Trail in Lyon Township

Man, 9-year-old son killed in crash; 2 other children remain hospitalized

LYON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An investigator was out Wednesday to re-examine the scene and re-interview a witness, specifically to see if potholes on Pontiac Trail were a factor in a crash Tuesday which killed a father, his son and injured two other children.

The Road Commission for Oakland County patched the roadway on Friday and again Tuesday after the crash, and after getting more complaints.

Those who live nearby said it has been a trouble spot for a long time.

"It's a safety issue," said Richard Fairfield, who lives in the area. "If there was water in it, if you didn't know it was gone and (the pothole) was flooded and you went into it, it would pull you real hard to the right because you're in 3-or-4 inches of water on the right side and nothing on the left side."

Moreover, the area was icy at the time the Mazda carrying Pedro Montanez and his three children slid into a dump truck which was traveling in the other direction. Montanez and his 9-year-old son were killed. His 6-year-old daughter remains in intensive care. Police say his 10-year-old son has taken a turn for the worse.

The road commission said the weather and fluctuating temperatures could have caused the patched potholes to pop out again.
