Preliminary exam delayed for man charged with Detroit mother's death

Lorenzo McNeil accused of killing Charmanek Johnson in home on Hazelwood Street

DETROIT – A preliminary exam that was scheduled Monday morning for a man who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend whose body was found next to her baby daughter in their Detroit home, has been delayed.

Lorenzo McNeil, 24, is also charged with child abuse, child abandonment and larceny.

The prosecution said it is still waiting for a final report from the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, and requested another date. A judge set the next court hearing for June 3.

Charmanek Johnson's grandmother had not heard from her in several days and contacted police on April 21. Officers entered Johnson's home on Hazelwood and found her body. She had been stabbed.

The 8-month-old baby was in a crib. She was treated for dehydration.

Prosecutors say McNeil and the 31-year-old Johnson sometimes lived together in the home. He is not the baby's father.
