Rally held to find person who shot, killed expectant mother

Bionka Lyons killed in her driveway

DETROIT – A neighborhood came together Saturday in an effort to find Bionka Lyons' killer. Lyons was just two months away from having her first child when she was shot five times in front of her home.

A rally was organized in an effort to find the person responsible for her death.

On Detroit's west side on Crocuslawn Avenue, much of the talk in the neighborhood centers on the homicide that took place on the block.

"I haven't had nothing but sleepless nights," family friend and neighbor Angelee Roland said.

Roland has called the neighborhood home for quite some time.

"Right at 50 years," Roland said.

This week, someone gunned down Lyons two houses away.

"We've had some crazy stuff, but this probably is the worse," Roland said.

The expecting mother was shot multiple times, killing her and her unborn son, named Carter. The investigation shows the shooter intended to kill Lyons.

"I describe Bionka as a unblemished jewel," Roland said.

Roland watched Lyons grow up and considers Lyons' parents to be friends.

"Her parents, I think, they're holding up better than the average parent or person would in a situation like that," Roland said.

The shooting left Roland and many confused.

"I'm puzzled. Yes, very much, so very much so," Roland said.

People rallied in the area Saturday to find Lyons' killer. They are demanding the gun violence stops.

"I think it's a senseless murder," said Phyllis Bell, who attended the rally. "How can anyone kill a pregnant woman and her child? I just can't see this happening."
