Justin Abdelkader’s hit on Toni Lydman at 15:11 in the second period hurt the Red Wings more than it might have hurt Lydman. Abdelkader took a five-minute major penalty for charging and received a game misconduct, a play that will surely be reviewed by the league. Eighteen seconds later, the Ducks’ Nick Bonino got one past Jimmy Howard for the game winning goal.
The hit turned out to be the turning point in the game.
The Ducks scored three more goals in the third period, for the 4-0 win.
The Red Wings had their chances, especially in the first period, but could not convert. Johan Franzen missed on a breakaway chance, and then the Red Wings failed to convert on 5:20 of power play time, some of it with a two-man advantage.
Special teams continues to play a major role in this series. Anaheim had two power play goals and one short-handed goal. The Ducks now have five power play goals in the series.
Detroit was 0-6 Saturday night with the man advantage.
Game four is Monday night.
