DETROIT – A jury has been seated for the second trial of a Detroit police officer who fatally shot a 7-year-old girl during a raid in 2010.

Officer Joseph Weekley's first trial ended without a verdict 15 months ago. He's charged with involuntary manslaughter. Opening statements are slated to begin Thursday morning.

Prosecutors say Weekley mishandled his gun, causing the death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones as she slept on a couch.

Lawyers and Judge Cynthia Gray Hathaway had been reviewing jurors since Monday.

An elite Detroit police unit burst through the front door at Aiyana's home to find a murder suspect. Weekley says he accidentally pulled the trigger when the girl's grandmother grabbed his submachine gun. She denies it.

Weekley told jurors at his first trial that he feels "devastated and depressed" over Aiyana's death.
