Rifle stolen from Highland Park police chief's car

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – A high powered assault rifle that belongs to Highland Park police chief was stolen out of his car while it was parked somewhere most people would call a safe spot.

Police Chief Kevin Coney's 2006 Cadillac Escalade was parked in front of the Rise Tabernacle Church on Livernois in Detroit. The chief was inside from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and when he came out he discovered someone had broken into the vehicle.

"This incident is currently under investigation right now," a representative with the Detroit Police Department said. "We are following up on some tips and we are confident we will get the weapon back and off the streets."
