Driver in serious condition following early morning shooting

RIVER ROUGE, Mich. – A River Rouge police officer was involved in an early morning shooting during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning - leaving the driver in stable condition.

It happened just before 2 a.m. near Jefferson Ave. and Cora Street.

The officer said he pulled the 49-year-old driver over for erratic driving. Once stopped, the driver reportedly stepped out of his car holding a gun. That's when the officer opened fire on the driver - hitting him several times. The driver did not fire back.

Investigators said the officer, who is now on administrative leave, feared for his life.

The investigation is continuing.
