Robbery attempt at marijuana shop leads to hours-long standoff

DETROIT – A standoff lasted hours between four thieves and two security guards Thursday morning at a medical marijuana dispensary in Detroit.

The thieves took sledgehammers to the windows of Green World Wellness Center and busted a security camera before being chased off by a security guard just after midnight.

“The guys were circling around us, kept shooting in the air,” head of security Tony Washington said.

Four hours later, the men took aim at one of the guards and fired shots.

“Soon as he turned out the back parking lot, they were sitting there waiting on him,” Washington said.

Washington said he and the other guard fired back chasing them off and leaving their car, sledgehammers and even a cellphone.

“You don’t know what’s out there,” Washington said. “That’s why we have armed guards 24 hours a day.”

The store manager worries about her safety because she feels dispensaries are being targeted.

“It’s honestly scary,” the store manager said. “Thankfully nobody on our security team got hurt. If anyone on their side got hurt, they got what was coming towards them.”

Police said there hasn’t been a spike in dispensaries hit by thieves.
