Officials said the boy's backpack was found near the Huron River.
Police and Monroe County deputies had K-9s and helicopters actively searching for Painter in the area Wednesday night.
Rockwood police said the boy, identified as Kole Lee Painter, was found hiding under a train overpass, which is apparently one of his favorite spots.
Painter was later reunited with his family.
