DETROIT – 
Al Glentz is a victim of mail theft allegedly committed by an employee of the Romeo Post Office.
This past December, Glentz mailed several $50 BP gas gift cards to family members.
"They said they didn't receive anything. So then I went and dug out the receipt," Glentz said.
He did some computer sleuthing. The cards were used for food and gas at a station one block from the Romeo Post Office. Federal investigators soon focused on Cynthia Winters, a Romeo mail carrier.
One of Winters' other customers had complained that a Target gift card never reached its destination before Christmas. It was used instead to buy Xboxes at a store in Shelby Township.
Investigators checked that store's surveillance video and said the customer was a white woman matching Winters' description.
On Feb. 13, postal inspectors put a test letter in the mail Winters was supposed to deliver that day. It was marked "U.S. currency" and it contained a device that would signal when the envelope was opened.
According to the federal complaint, three minutes after the test letter went into alarm mode agents pulled her over in the parking lot of the Ford engine plant.
"She's always been very friendly with me, I mean, she would stop in the summer and talk," said Glentz.
Federal investigators say Winters eventually admitted to stealing mail and explained, "I have six kids and 17 grandchildren. I didn't have anything to give them so I would look for the gift cards."
"You do the crime, you do the time," said Glentz. "Yeah they got a rough job, but still they get good pay. They don't have to steal from somebody."
