Police said security camera footage shows a man entering the store around 8:30 a.m. and setting the backpack down in an aisle before leaving.

"We believe we know the identity of this subject, and our detectives are investigating and will attempt to ascertain what his intentions were," the department said in a statement.

Police said the backpack incident was "heightened" by two previous incidents that happened at the store in the last 12 hours.

Someone went into the store Monday afternoon wearing a camouflage backpack and screamed "Death to the honky's" and "Death to Obama," police said. That person fled before officers arrived.

Then, at 3 a.m. Tuesday, a former Walmart employee came into the store to clean out his locker made disturbing statements about harming himself to management, police said. That man was taken to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Police initially reported that a threatening note had been found near the backpack, but said they later confirmed that it had nothing to do with the backpack.
