Roundabouts planned for busy Oakland County intersections

Farmington Hills, county road commission plan roundabouts at 3 Orchard Lake Road intersections

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – If you drive on Orchard Lake Road, you know it's congested. What you may not know, is the area between 13 Mile and 14 Mile roads is a "high crash location."

Between 2009-2011, there were 134 crashes.

So the city of Farmington Hills, along with the Oakland County Road Commission, hired an engineering consulting to firm to search for a solution.

What they've come up with is a plan for improvement.

The proposed plan includes eliminating the shared left turn lane completely and creating three roundabouts.

1) Orchard Lake Road at13 Mile Road
2) Orchard Lake Road at Firwood Avenue

Residents got a peek at the plans at an information session on Wednesday.

"I like them a lot," Rod Vaughn said. "It helps reduce traffic accidents and keeps traffic moving."

"It worries me that a major street would get so many roundabouts so close together," Candace Cesarz said "I'll be interested to see how this goes."

Right now, the plans are in the very early stages. If the city was able to get federal funding, construction wouldn't begin on the project until 2020.

Currently, they are looking for feedback from residents and business owners.
