Royal Oak business name causes controversy

Some argue bringing national franchise to Royal Oak is just too insensitive

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A new business in Royal Oak is causing controversy because of its connection to Nov 14, 1991, when an armed man walked into the Royal Oak Post Office and opened fire, killing three people. A former postal worker was the man who pulled the trigger.

"Goin' Postal," the new packaging and shipping store, just popped up on Woodward in Royal Oak.

The store is a national franchise with 8 shops in Michigan, but some argue bringing the store to Royal Oak is just too insensitive.

The Royal Oak Patch.com featured the new store in a business story, and the comments are pouring in.

One person posted, "No smiles here. Only tears. I know people who were there that day."

Another person said, "Unbelievably insensitive. Hope they didn't sign a long term lease. Can't imagine that business succeeding in this town."

The store's owner Suzanne Weinberg Responded to the comments saying, "As a Royal Oak resident myself, I have nothing but praise for the USPS and my neighborhood postman I've had for 20 years. A family member of mine was a victim of a similar tragedy, so I personally know the devastation brought on by acts of violence. It was never my intention to offend anyone, simply provide valuable services to the community."
