Armed man robs couple loading luggage into vehicle before vacation

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A man and a woman were robbed at gunpoint Sunday morning as they loaded luggage into their vehicle in Royal Oak before leaving for vacation.

According to police, the robbery happened around 7 a.m. in the 600 block of South Edgeworth Avenue. The man was armed with a handgun and left with the victims' wallet, keys, phones and jewelry.

The 56-year-old man and 52-year-old woman were packing their bags to go see the total solar eclipse when they were attacked.

"They took some cash, wallet, keys, phones and some jewelry," Royal Oak police Lt. Keith Spencer said.

The 56-year-old man, named Jim, said they continued on their trip, but they didn't want to talk about the theft. He said they've lived in Royal Oak for 20 years and have never seen or heard of this type of attack.

"Absolutely terrible," neighbor Bill Richie said. "People like that should be going to church, not robbing people. I walk this neighborhood pretty much every day and I never see problems like that, so it's very alarming."

The man was described as black, in his 20s, clean shaven, thin and wearing a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants. He left in a waiting vehicle described as a newer silver Chevrolet Malibu or Impala, which sped off toward I-75.

The victims were not injured, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Royal Oak Police Department Criminal Investigation Division at 248-246-3456.
