She began serving City Council in January 2010. When former president Charles Pugh abruptly left office last year, the City Council body voted Jenkins to serve as president until the end of the term in December 2013.

She most recently has been serving at-large.

She was less than a year into her 4-year term.

"I certainly am grateful that residents in the city of Detroit believed in me, to elect me a second time. I'm grateful for that and even though I'm leaving City Council, I'm not leaving the city. My life's work is here, my life commitment is here," said Jenkins.

She hopes her legacy is one of integrity.

"One of bringing calm, stability and professionalism at a time when this city needed it and sorely deserved it. I think in 2010 we came in as a group and we did provide some stability that had not been there before," she said.
