DETROIT - While Detroit police are searching for the person who shot 9-year-old Malik Cosey Jr. in his head Saturday, his family is looking for answers.
Malik and two other children were sitting inside a car when he was shot Saturday in the 15000 block of Murray Hill between Midland and Keeler. The kids were waiting to go to the movies with their grandmother.
Malik's family said an unknown black male walked pass the address and shots were fired at him from a vehicle. The man ran towards the car where Malik was. The shots missed the intended target and struck Malik.
He was hit in the head. He is in stable condition. The other two kids were not injured.
Police are looking for a silver or gray Dodge Magnum with tinted windows. They believe shots were fired from this vehicle.
With the help of Crime Stoppers of Michigan, Malik's parents held a news conference at Thursday morning at Victory Community Church on West Seven Mile Road. His mother, father, step-mother, grandmother, great grandfather and brother were in attendance.
Crime Stoppers is asking for anonymous tips and offering a cash reward up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. If the tip that leads to an arrest is received by midnight of today’s press conference, $1,000 will be added to the reward, raising the total to $2,000.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
A peace walk is planned for Friday in honor of Cosey.
