New challenge to Michigan's open carry laws

New legislation could create an exemption for concealed pistol licenses

LANSING – There are new proposed changes in the works for Michigan's open carry law.

The Senate Committee on Judiciary passed the bill -- Senate Bill 442 -- with a 3-2 vote on Tuesday. It will now go on to the full Senate.

The bill deals with open carry laws in Michigan and would allow those with concealed pistol licenses to carry concealed pistols in pistol-free zones, and eliminate the requirement to openly carry in those areas.

Testimonies for and against the new bill will be heard at 3 p.m. today inside of the Farnum Building in downtown Lansing.

Currently, pistol-free zones in Michigan are schools, day cares, bars, hospitals, college campuses, casinos, churches, and entertainment venues that seat more than 2,500 people.
