FARMINGTON, Mich. – Senior pranks are a ritual for graduating students, but the class of 2016 is crossing the line and forced schools across metro Detroit into lockdowns and making costly repairs.
Ki Blakmon is a senior at Farmington High School. She just finished her final week.
“The excitement was about graduation, getting out of school, and then second was the senior prank,” Blakmon said.
The administration was not as excited about the prank.
Seniors were given a classroom to celebrate their graduation and last week of classes. The students may have taken things to far.
“Some people decided to ruin classrooms,” Blakmon said. “The dog food, the baby oil, glitter, everywhere. It was bad.”
In Ann Arbor, a senior is believed to have forced Huron High School to go on lockdown after reports of a suspicious person was armed with a weapon.
Police went from room to room searching for the person, but no one was found, all while students were inside their classrooms.
The superintendent of Birmingham Public Schools is thankful the senior prank at Seaholm High School didn’t involve police, but the prank did leave people injured after seniors poured substance over the floors before dismissal.
“It was just too much,” superintendent Daniel Nerad said. “We had some minor accidents occur trying to travel over all that liquid.”
The district decided to cancel the senior banquet to send a clear message.
“We can be about fun, but we need to be more thoughtful going forward of these types of group activities that can just go too far,” Nerad said.
