DETROIT – A DDOT bus collided with a car at the corner of Mack Avenue and Chalmers Street on Wednesday morning, flipping the car and sending both drivers to the hospital.
Police believe a 1970s-ish Oldsmobile with 24-inch rims was heading west on Mack Avenue when it took a sharp left turn onto Chalmers and collided with the bus. Police said the bus was going much faster than the posted speed. The collision sent the car into a utility pole and into a gas station.
The bus driver, Leondre Odon, was knocked unconscious in the crash. The driver has 14 years experience behind a bus.
The driver of the Oldsmobile, born in 1989, had to be cut out of the vehicle with the Jaws of Life.
A police sergeant at the scene said no one else was in the car at the time of the crash. Paint transfer and damage indicates the red Oldsmobile was heading east on Mack when it was T-boned by the bus. The car may have been trying to make the light, according to police.
