Sorbo responded to the fire at Crystal Lake Apartments on January 6.  He was notified that people were trapped on the second and third floors.

He caught a 4-year-old child who was tossed from a second-floor balcony by a desperate mother.

With a ladder and the aid of other members of the police department, Sorbo was able to bring the child's mother down the ladder on his back.

Sorbo re-entered the burning building, finding an elderly man and his dog, and lead them both to safety.

The Police Medal of Valor is a prestigious award and the second highest the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police may bestow upon a law enforcement officer.
