Sheriff tells drivers to be alert; authorities search for interstate shooter

DETROIT – Police are asking travelers on Interstate 69 or heading west on Interstate 94 to be on alert for a shooter who has been firing at vehicles.

So far, three cars have been hit in Eaton, Branch, and Calhoun counties.

A press conference was held Friday afternoon at the Marshall Regional Law Enforcement Center concerning these recent shooting incidents.

"Our number one priority is to bring this to a stop," said Sheriff Matt Saxton, of Calhoun County.

The incidents took place on Aug. 19, Sept. 2, and Sept. 3, according to the sheriff's office.

No injuries have occurred in any of the incidents.

Law enforcement told travelers not to give up on Labor Day weekend plans but asked that drivers pay attention.

Authorities are asking drivers to watch for suspicious vehicles stopped on roadways in these areas, especially vehicles stopped with the windows down.

Drivers also have explicit instructions to continue driving if they think their car was hit.

Do not stop on the freeway. Get off at the next off ramp, call 911, and don't touch anything.
