Some Ypsilanti teachers have paychecks delayed

Processing error blamed for pay delay at Ypsilanti Community Schools

YPSILANTI, Mich. – About 300 employees of the Ypsilanti Community Schools did not receive their paychecks Friday.

The Ypsilanti Community School district was formed by the consolidation of the Ypsilanti and Willow Run districts.  The new district began operations July 1.

Former Willow Run employees got their checks as scheduled on Friday.  But 300 employees from the former Ypsilanti district received emails telling them a processing error was delaying their checks until Saturday or Monday.

A former Ypsilanti teacher, who was laid off but is still receiving paychecks, did not want her name used.  But she said the delay is difficult for her because she literally lives paycheck to paycheck.

"I don't have a choice but to sit here and wait. I don't even have money for gas to go anywhere. so praise the Lord I have a roof over my head so I can stay at home over the weekend. A lot of people don't even have that option," the teacher said.

A spokeswoman for the school district is taking steps to insure the problem does not happen again.
