Man shot during argument with relative in Detroit

17-year-old in police custody

DETROIT – Police said 44-year-old Joe Canfield broke into his cousin's home early Monday morning in the 5800 block of Lumley on Detroit's west side.

Canfield had a 357 Magnum and was demanding the keys to his relative's truck. Another cousin, a 17-year-old, refused and started firing with an AK-47. He shot Canfield multiple times in the legs and chest.

The family believes he tried to escape after being shot, judging by the blood trail that firefighters cleaned up from the house to the truck.

"My brother's not doing good," said Tina Canfield. "He's bleeding ... they can't get the bleeding to stop .. and they think he might be brain dead, because he was dead for 20-30 minutes. They couldn't get a pulse."

The 17-year-old was taken into police custody. Tina Canfield said her brother wasn't homeless and this wasn't a break-in. She said he had been living at the Lumley home for a couple of months.

"They were both together last night and they were in happy spirits. I don't know what went wrong," she said.

Canfield is in critical condition.
