SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Southfield police officers opened fire on a suspected bank robber early Saturday morning when he tried to run down officers with a vehicle, according to police.
Officers responded to an alarm about 4:55 a.m. at the Comerica Bank on Telegraph Road at 10 Mile Road after the alarm company saw a man inside the bank taking cash.
The robber fled the bank in an unknown direction but police found him at Berg Road and Oliver Court in a parked vehicle. Officers approached the vehicle on foot and the suspect started to drive at them in an attempt to run them down, according to police.
That's when officers opened fire at the vehicle. The man crashed the vehicle at Lahser and 8 Mile roads. He suffered a non-life-threatening wound and was treated at a nearby hospital before being released to Southfield police.
He is in custody. Southfield police say he is suspected of being involved in multiple break-ins and robberies at local banks.
