State police: Driver fled troopers only to be found smoking joint next to car in Detroit

DETROIT – A driver who fled Michigan State Police troopers Tuesday morning in Detroit eventually was found smoking a joint next to the vehicle, police said.

It was about 10:15 a.m. when troopers tried to stop a 2002 BMW sedan on Woodward Avenue near State Fair due to the vehicle's illegally tinted front driver and passenger windows. Police said troopers found the vehicle was improperly registered, too.

The driver started fleeing on Woodward Avenue at a high rate of speed. Police said he disregarded all traffic signals and made several evasive maneuvers. Troopers had to terminate their pursuit when they lost sight of the vehicle.

However, they later were able to identify the driver and tracked him to his address. Troopers found the vehicle and the driver at the address in Detroit. When they arrived, the man was in the front yard next to the vehicle smoking what police called a marijuana cigarette. He was arrested and taken to the Detroit Detention Center where he is being held while the prosecutor reviews the case.
