Storms cause damage, major flooding around Detroit

DETROIT – Heavy rains around Detroit caused damage to electrical wires and produced heavy flooding in some areas.

The downpours left drivers stranded on Southfield Freeway as the highway began to flood with several feet of water.

Hundreds watched on Local 4’s Facebook page as Jermont Terry spoke with a man who was stranded in the middle of the highway after his car got stuck in high waters.

“I wanted to be able to help him get out of the car if he needed because he couldn’t get the windows down and couldn’t get the door open because of the water” said the stranded man’s wife, who showed up after receiving a call from her husband about the flooding.

Reports of flooded basements and streets littered with tree branches came from numerous neighborhoods around Detroit.

Local 4’s Ben Bailey says flooding may continue into the night especially in highway underpasses and loy-lying areas but says things should dry up by Sunday.
