Strike avoided: GM reaches deal with auto workers in Canada

Oshawa plant to remain open

DETROIT – Details are still being hammered out but General Motors has reached a tentative deal with Unifor, the union for auto workers in Canada.

The deal was struck moments before a midnight deadline, avoiding a strike from the union.

As part of the new 4-year contract, GM has promised an investment to keep its Oshawa plant open.

The tentative agreement, according to Unifor President Jerry Dias, will also include wage increases and part-time employees will become full-time employees.

The agreement is for workers in Oshawa, St. Catherines and Woodstock.
